Hello my name is Ken Smith, I was born in St Helens,
Merseyside, My Mother was a Guernsey Girl evacuated during the second
world war to St Helens where she met my Father, I am the youngest of 4
children and in 1963 the whole family returned to Guernsey where we have
been ever since.
I am the owner of Guernsey Pine, Bridge Furniture & Owen
Hancock Carpets all now located on the Bridge
I have been involved in entertainment since the age of
17 when I joined a band called Mottley, we were together for a few years
then had a 10 year gap before reforming for another couple of years,
being the front man of the group I started doing a little comedy and
with Howard Thompson started a Double Act Smith & Thompson, It was at
that time that the Character Torteval Tommy was created and is now
regularly seen on TV and heard on Radio.
We did a couple of summer seasons with Hojo at the Savoy
Hotel and The Wayside Cheer Hotel.
I then Started to promote regular cabarets at the
Wayside Cheer with popular comedians of the day, like Stan Boardman,
Roger De Courcey, Ray Alan & Lord Charles, Norman Collier, Eddie
Collinton, Jimmy Cricket, Ken Goodwin etc and did a Summer Season with a
Fabulous Singer Patrina Johns a great Funny Man Barry Cheese and
guest shoes with Berni Flint on Saturdays.
Then came a 12 year gap from entertainment followed to concentrate
on the Furniture Business but in 2004 I decided its time to revive
Cabaret Entertainment in Guernsey so Now here we are at the Wayside
Cheer Hotel which is the only room that is left intact in the
Island from the Old Days of Cabaret.
Having had a very successful start in 2004/5 we are looking
forward to a great 2006 season with approx 2 shows per month starting in
February with Jimmy Jemain One of the top Tribute acts in the UK, winner
of Stars in their Eyes as CLIFF RICHARD.
In 2007 Ken decided to buy The Wayside Cheer Hotel to
preserve the last of the Cabaret Venues were popular in the 70s it is
hoped that shows will continue for many years to come
Support Acts for the Shows are Torteval Tommy, Ken Smth
& Lee Smith
